The hustle and bustle, the whirlwind of colors and overpowering smells, are the reasons why I explore markets. It’s exhilarating, engaging, and most importantly revealing of everyday life.
My most memorable experience was at the Catania fish market. I witnessed fish guts flying left and right, bloody Euros exchanging fat hands, men shouting and fixating piercing looks at their customers. It was intimidating to photograph; I was unsure if I was photographing legal or illegal transactions. I was in a sea of humans, among Somali women selling fake gold jewelry, Indian men sowing cloths, Latinos drinking beer to Bachata music, and Italian men slamming 50 EUR bills and cards on makeshift tables from cardboard. I was there invisible to all, except when their eyes caught my lens.
