Behind the Face

Interacting with people is the most gratifying aspect of photography. The excitement comes with the initial encounter when I approach a stranger and express interest in photographing them. I hold my breath in hope of an agreement, and more often than not, it works. The discomfort is there, but vanishes when we start conversing. The interaction easily becomes intimate, sometimes tense or comical, and freeing for both.

Experiencing a person’s vulnerability is the driving force behind my photography. I see it as a privilege to be able to share a close moment with someone I met by chance. With every encounter I hope my subjects walk away with their chin up and uplifted spirit, because I certainly do.
